As a child, James Ketcham is snatched from the streets of England and sold abroad as an indentured servant to the unforgiving world of the 17th Century Caribbean. But when his passage is interrupted by a terrible battle at sea, he is washed ashore and taken in by an international band of the underclass English, French, Hollanders, Native Americans and runaway black slaves.

However, as he builds a life with these castaways of humanity, the Empire of Holy Spain launches a campaign to purge all “heretics” from its imperial lands a campaign that will take from James all that he loves. He abandons his humble ambitions, taking up sword and sail to avenge the atrocities committed by the Spanish Crown and Inquisition, unaware that he would one day become the most feared pirate on the Spanish Main, a hero to his countrymen and The Brethren Prince.

The Brethren Prince is the real story of buccaneers in the New World. It is a thoroughly researched, historically accurate portrayal of life in the mid-17th Century Caribbean, nested in authentic historical events of the time. It captures the cruelty, nationalistic fervor, and religious virulence of the Imperial powers of the day but also the pirates who preyed on them.

The Brethren Prince Piracy Revenge and the Culture Clash of the Old Caribbean edition by Ira Smith Literature Fiction eBooks

I admit to being a most ardent fan of pirate books, fiction or non-fiction! Needless to say, I love the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series! This amazingly exciting, well-written novel is full of memorable characters, exciting battle scenes and sensual romance. It's one book I truly could not put down. The main character is well described and develops as a flawed human being during a tumultuous era of the Spanish Inquisition in the Spanish American colonies of the Caribbean mid 1600's. The startling methods and cruelty of the religious zealots in charge is thoroughly drawn out from investigation into family geneology to arrest, torture, trial and eventual punishment, not uncommonly death. Also employed are the goverments, monarchies and armies machinations of each country's citizenry.
I am awed with Ira Smith's obvious attention to historic detail while masterfully building this well structured plot. I highly recommend this book to readers of Caribbean history, pirates, English and Spanish historical novels. You will not be disappointed.

The Brethren Prince Piracy Revenge and the Culture Clash of the Old Caribbean edition by Ira Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I heard about The Brethren Prince through word of mouth from someone who knows the author. The subject sounded interesting since it promised to examine piracy in the new world from a unique historical perspective. I was a little bit skeptical at first of the quality because I heard it was the author's first published book. The brand new world of E-publishing has created a lot of gems but also a dirth of junk. I'm glad to say, though, that The Brethren Prince definately isn't amongst the junk!

For anyone who has ever watched Pirates of the Caribbean and wondered what it was actually like to be a pirate in the Caribbean, The Brethren Prince will draw you a clear picture. I especially liked the honesty with which the pirates are portrayed. There aren't any saints in this story, and these aren't your fun loving, adventure seekers. Even the main protagonist is a man of flaws. You'll never really know how to feel about many of the characters. Like the Frenchman, Maison I found myself feeling guilty for liking him.

But beyond that, The Brethren Prince is also an excellent adventure novel. The story succumbed to a few of the typical adventure novel tropes (like when one of the biggest good-guys squares off with the biggest bad guy) but other, unorthidox plot elements generally made up for it. I'd give The Brethren Prince a 4 and a half star rating if I could, but since its the authors first novel, I've given him the benefit of the doubt with 5 stars. Either way, its well worth the read!
Ira Smith has woven a historically accurate and action packed novel. The writing is clean, clear and easy to read and the plot flows smoothly. Once started, it's hard to stop.

What captures the reader right from the start is not only the historical accuracy, but it's human accuracy as well. His portrayal of human suffering, their flaws and survival when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges is spot on.
The author did not shy away from the relentless greed nor the great tragedies of the times inflicted by the crown, pirates and church combined and his razor sharp portrayal of each event and character draws the reader in deeper with each page turned. This is no fairy tale, but real life history in all its gore, guts and glory.

I found myself not only rooting for the good guys but also scolding and cheering for James Ketchum the lead character to find the courage after a lifetime of suffering and service to others to put his own life in front of the needs of the crown and find not only himself but true love as well. Equally appealing to both genders and a really great read!
Beginning with the shipwreck of its 12-year-old protagonist, this book immediately took me back in time, to my reading of Treasure Island, as a boy. The descriptions are rich, and, I could clearly see every scene in my mind. We follow James Ketcham’s many adventures as laborer, plantation owner, privateer, leader of men, and more, to about age 28.

The author used just the right amount of nautical, military and other specialty jargon -- such that meaning was conveyed, and a layman might feel enlightened with new vocabulary, yet, not feel like it was thrown in to be showy, or as a cheap way of setting scenes. The same is true of the overall use of language -- you can bet it was not authentic to the 17th century, but, it did convey a sense of time and place. Then, there was the Caribbean economy, slave trade, the Spanish Inquisition, duty to king, warfare tactics -- all vividly described, and mostly plausible. I felt like I was reading fairly accurate historical fiction.

I enjoyed this book very much, but, it was not without frustration. Troubles began about a fifth of the the way in, with James’ first love, and the author’s efforts at describing sexual relations. This is a fool's errand, leading to awkward prose, and laughable, hackneyed euphemisms for the engorged organs. And, there was romance, somewhat overdone. And, the brooding. Oh… the brooding! All of this could have been much pared down, without changing the trajectory or depth of the story, and made it that much stronger.

Typographical errors were fairly common throughout the book, but, not to the point of being a great distraction.
