St. Germaine, North Carolina was in a crabby mood. Yes, the whole town. If a temperament could affect an entire populace, "crabby" was what St. Germaine was. Noylene's new personal Christian astrologer, a woman named Goldi Fawn Birtwhistle, blamed it on the convergence of Pluto and the third moon of Jupiter.
Pete Moss, the owner of the Slab Café, thought that the crabbiness might have something to do with the increasing levels of positive ion bombardment from outer space. Also included in Pete's theory were sunspots, an ever-widening hole in the ozone layer, the federal deficit, CNN election coverage, armadillo migration, and the cancellation of two long-running soap operas.
Usually in St. Germaine, the three weeks before Christmas were marked by an increase in good feelings toward one's fellow man. Not this year.
St. Germaine's police chief, Hayden Konig, and all the usual suspects, return in this heartwarming Christmas tale. When a long-lost cantata is found in the basement of the courthouse, a Christmas Eve performance is the order of the day. What happens next is anyone's guess.

"I could prob'ly sell another dozen if I could get any more of them praying Santas, but I can't. I order them from Japan. That's why that baby Jesus is wearing a kimono."I must admit I am a big fan of the Liturgical Mysteries series--generally a nice taste of small town living, a funny cast of characters, throw in some religion (Episcopal variety), music and a dose of murder to figure out and these are a great read. This one is a little different, there is indeed a mystery but no murder (and no revolving door for the clergy) this time around, but reads more like an extended version of a slice of life involving our favorite characters.
Though the books don't have to be read in order per se, they do tend to allude back to events in previous books so though I found this immensely enjoyable-funny, touching and bittersweet, I would recommend that a new reader start at the beginning with The Alto Wore Tweed (The Liturgical Mysteries). Unlike many series time does march on in St. Germaine so it might be best to keep it in order.
Overall I HIGHLY recommend the series (I bought the paper versions for my FIL, a retired Episcopal Priest, who then shared them with his old choir master, if that gives a good idea how much I liked the books...). Keep your sense of humor ready and don't take anything too seriously. These are fun! Even this one that has a bit of bittersweet mixed in.

The Christmas Cantata The Liturgical Mysteries Book 10 edition by Mark Schweizer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What could be more magical than all my friends in St. Germaine from books #1-9 interacting in a special Christmas story of redemption and restoration? For this one special occasion, Mark Schweizer forgoes witty puns and his own special Raymond-Chandleresque mystery to tell a sweet tale of a newly discovered cantata written in 1942, but never performed. While the entire tone of the book is radically different from the tongue-in-cheek humor of the other books in the series, I found this difference spellbinding. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Who was this mysterious composer? Why wasn't her incredible work performed at St. Barnabas way back when? What caused the music to be so mood-altering for everyone who heard it? Truly a wonderful mystery. I loved the masterful way Schweizer unfolded clues, dribbling out drip by drip to amp up the suspense. This may be my new favorite liturgical mystery. Makes me feel the Christmas joy and peace on earth all over. SIGH!
I have fallen completely in love with this series of books but this one will be hard to beat. I picked it up fully expecting to laugh, which I did, but the pure emotion that flows from this story is what Christmas is all about for me. I will fully admit that I'm one of the biggest saps of all time but if you aren't moved by this story, expect three ghosts to visit you Christmas Eve. Read it with the tissues nearby but for the best reason ever. I know what all the readers in my family are getting for Christmas this year, THE CHRISTMAS CANTATA!
This was my first Schweizer novel, but it won't be my last. However, a word of caution almost all reviews state that in every Mark Schweizer novel, a body turns up. I kept waiting, but nobody. Plenty of busybodies, all fleshed out very well by the author.
What we have is a mystery, in this case about a cantata, but it could have been a piece of history, a secret Declaration of In Dependents, or secrets to fly fishing. It doesn't matter. It remains a mystery until near the end.
For lack of a better word, it's a "comfortable" book. Great bedtime reading that leaves one kind of warm and toasty (well, it does take place at Christmastime) and extremely satisfied with the conclusion.
I've already bought two more of Schweizer's books, but first I have to get through others that I have bought from writers of a new generation who seem to write in the "old" style. All of a sudden, thanks to the more believable (i.e., their protagonists are not super-human) writers such as Schweizer, Culver, and Horrocks, I'm back in my "reading mood."
EW
March 28, 2013 I have now bought every Schweizer novel for my KF. As I was reading, almost every one became my favorite, but in the final analysis - such as it is - The Christmas Cantana was my favorite. I do wish I had read others beforehand, but it's not absolutely necessary. Fortunately, Mr. Schweizer started out of the gate beautifully and never wavered stylistically or in keeping with his characters. Oddly, I just finished the Alto Wore Tweed, his first book. Can't wait for his next one...
While most of the books in this series can probably be read out of sequence, I'm glad I've been reading them in order. Schweizer doesn't fill in background notes in this book the way he has in previous ones. But the funny St. Germaine characters are still there, with their entertaining and loveable personalities. And this book does NOT have any Chandler-esque subplot going on, despite the cover cartoon character. I wish the cover with the wreath on the organ had attempted to picture one of Noylene's special wreaths with the baby Jesus in a Chinese kimono and the emus, zebras, and other animals that Noylene added to her best selling Christmas creations. This is just a really nice Christmas story. And even though I've read it just after Easter, I may make it part of my Christmas traditions. I think I'd like it even better than watching "It's A Wonderful Life"!
I loved this book, and even if you don't want to work your way up to this tenth in the series, I'm positive you'll still enjoy this one no matter what other ones you skip. Really, really special.
