Secrets of a Happy Marriage Cathy Kelly 9781409153689 Books
I'd pre-ordered this book for my kindle as I've always loved Cathy Kelly books. Unfortunately this just did not hit the mark for me. On a number of occasions I almost gave up but I hate to be defeated so ploughed on and finished the book. One of the main problems I have with this book is the confusing number of characters all coming together to celebrate a relative's 70th birthday party. A couple of the characters were interesting but mostly I found them one dimensional and was irritated by the authors insistence of pointing out their main character flaw each time they were part of the narrative.
All in all it was quite a disappointing read.

Secrets of a Happy Marriage Cathy Kelly 9781409153689 Books Reviews
Overall enjoyed this read once I gave up trying to remember all the characters which came in rapidly. Thought I'd give up but delighted I didn't. Well done Kathy.
I love Cathy Kelly's books but this one just had too many characters - was hard to keep them straight. I prefer her other books.
I love Cathy Kelly's books and have been searching for one I had not read. Love her complex characters.
I used to like Cathy Kelly's books but I feel this was not the best. There were too many characters and the stories about each of them were not too in depth. Basically, she had too many characters over 8 of whom she just did not have the time to delve into their personal stories. I give the book 3 stars only because I have loved her older books.
I discovered Cathy Kelly several years ago and have enjoyed all of her books. Got this one as a Christmas gift to myself and read it over the holidays. I was a librarian before retiring and always suggested her books to patrons who I knew enjoyed Maeve Binchey's writing. Kelly's books have interesting characters that you can relate to, and I like that her main characters are women in a wide age group. The books deal with issues that many women have dealt with in real life, but they are also fun and entertaining to read. (that is what I am looking for when it comes to contemporary fiction these days)
I have read and enjoyed all of Cathy Kelly's books so when book this became
available, I purchased it without reading any reviews . Very early into the book, I came back to read the reviews to see if anyone else felt about this book as I did or was it just me ? I'm relieved to see that I am not the only one who finds this story confusing with too many characters and the story too-ing and fro-ing , going backwards in time , then back to present , without explanation . I'm not sure if I should carry on with it at this point .
First off, there is no May-December romance, and I am not even sure how the book has that description. In purchasing it, I presumed Bess would be the same age, or thereabouts. WRONG. Bess is in her upper 50's lower 60's, I don't remember which it is, with a 30-something year old daughter, Amy. Edward, Bess's husband and JoJo's dad, is 70. So that was my first eye raise.
Next, JoJo. I just plain didn't like her. Not one little bit. She is a spoiled brat, if that's even possible for someone in her 30's. She has a temper tantrum throughout most of the book because her dad married Bess 2 years after JoJo's mom died. JoJo is married to Hugh, and man, he puts up a with a lot from her.
Cari is JoJo's cousin, and I didn't like her either. She was dumped on her wedding day...at the alter,...and is just a nasty person now to any man who tries to be nice to her. I think she is supposed to be a tough, strong woman. But she just comes off as a witch.
Amy is Bess's daughter and is a rather undeveloped character. She pops in and out, she has a few dramatic chapters and then just sort of fades away. But then again, her mom is Bess, and she too is an odd character. One minute she is sweet, the next she is cold, the next she is aloof.
So why did I give this 4 stars if I didn't really like any of the characters? I liked the plot overall. There was a few things that were a surprise and I like that. But mostly because I like Cathy Kelly as an author.
I'd pre-ordered this book for my kindle as I've always loved Cathy Kelly books. Unfortunately this just did not hit the mark for me. On a number of occasions I almost gave up but I hate to be defeated so ploughed on and finished the book.
